You Joined Scouting — Now What?

Welcome to Scouting! Your family has joined an adventure filled with outdoor experiences, new skills, friendships, leadership, and opportunities to make great memories.

If you’re a new Scout parent, you may be wondering what happens next. Here are a few things that will help you get started.

1. Connect With Your Pack, Troop, Crew, or Ship

Your local unit will be your main source of information about meetings, activities, campouts, advancement, and upcoming events.

Make sure you know:

• When and where your unit meets

• Who your Scout’s leaders are

• How your unit communicates with families

• Where to find the unit calendar

• What upcoming activities your Scout can participate in

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Scout leaders are there to help your family get started.

2. Learn More About Your Scouting Program

Scouting America offers programs for youth of different ages and interests. Take some time to learn more about your Scout’s program, advancement opportunities, activities, and what they can experience along the way.

You can also find information about Merit Badges, advancement opportunities, and the many subjects Scouts can explore through Scouting America’s program resources.

3. Get the Basics

Your unit can help you determine exactly what your Scout needs.

Depending on the program, this may include:

• Scout uniform

• Handbook

• Camping or outdoor gear

• Health forms

• Information about dues or activity fees

You do not need to purchase everything at once. Check with your unit before buying gear so you know what is actually needed.

4. Stay Connected With Your District

Last Frontier Council is made up of several districts, and each district has its own channel on ScoutingRocks.TV.

Your district channel is a great place to find information about local events, activities, training opportunities, announcements, and other Scouting news.

You can also subscribe to council and district newsletters to have important information delivered directly to your inbox.

5. Explore Scouting Resources

Scouting has many resources available for Scouts, parents, and leaders.

On ScoutingRocks.TV, select the three-line menu in the upper-left corner. From there, you can access your profile and the Resources section.

The Resources page includes helpful information, training opportunities, forms, and other materials to help your family navigate Scouting.

6. Check the Council Calendar

There is much more to Scouting than weekly meetings!

Throughout the year, Scouts can participate in camping, outdoor adventures, Merit Badge opportunities, family events, training, service projects, special activities, and more.

Visit the Calendar at the bottom of ScoutingRocks.TV to see upcoming opportunities throughout Last Frontier Council.

Check it regularly and plan ahead so your Scout doesn’t miss an adventure.

Social media is another easy way to stay connected and see what is happening throughout the council.

8. Parents Can Get Involved, Too!

Scouting is a family experience, and parents and volunteers are an important part of making the program successful.

You don’t have to know everything about Scouting to help. Parents can assist with activities, transportation, camping, events, fundraising, committees, leadership, and many other areas.

Even a small amount of involvement can make a difference.
